May is Older Americans Month, it is about connecting, creating and contributing and there are many activities happening around our region to make this happen. The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging is pleased to kick off the events with the release of our 35th Annual Yellow Book Senior Information and Assistance Directory, and a celebration of two age-friendly nonprofits doing great work around civic engagement and multi-generational volunteering; as we hand out event cards highlighting great things to do during Older Americans Month. Larry, a volunteer who started early on with the Yellow Book publication today says, “People use it! They call places in town and say ‘I saw you in the Yellow Book.’ The best information is around housing, home improvements, home health and legal.”
The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging looks forward to raising awareness about the needs and resources for seniors in our region during Older Americans Month as we strive to support this years theme of connect, create and contribute. Older Americans Month encourages us to recognize the vital role older adults play in our communities and the Yellow Book provides local senior resources and information for everyone. The continued aging of the Baby Boomers, a cohort which makes up a significant portion of our region’s population, as well as an ever-increasing life expectancy nationwide will increase the need for senior services. Colorado in general, and the Pikes Peak region specifically, are anticipated to experience significant growth in the overall percentage of the population over age sixty when compared to many other parts of the country.
