The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments (PPACG) and DRIVE SMART COLORADO (Drive Smart) are excited to announce that Drive Smart has joined the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments. PPACG is the Transportation Planning Agency for the Pikes Peak Region Metropolitan Planning Organization. Transportation planning for the Pikes Peak region is a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive process to help ensure mobility, safety, and efficiency in our transportation system. Drive Smart was founded in 1989 with a mission to reduce the number of traffic crashes through community collaboration and education.
Both organizations are dedicated to creating a safer driving environment. The incidence of severe traffic crashes and serious violations that threaten motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians continues to increase throughout Colorado and the Pikes Peak Region, demonstrating the continued need for the type of community traffic safety education programs that Drive Smart has excelled at.
The PPACG Board of Directors formally declared on April 14, 2021 its interest in assuming operational responsibility for the Drive Smart 501(c)(3) as a free-standing nonprofit entity in order to continue its mission of traffic safety education. On May 14th, the Drive Smart Board of Directors, voted their approval for the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments to become the operational entity of Drive Smart Colorado.
John Henry, Chair of Drive Smart says “I see this as a fitting place for Drive Smart to continue its record of traffic safety education, and an opportunity to chart some new directions for the betterment of area residents, motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. I’m excited.”
Andrew Gunning, Executive Director of PPACG says “This new partnership with Drive Smart is a great fit with PPACG’s existing programs and areas of activity, including our longstanding and effective focus on senior populations, regional transportation safety, mobility, and efficiency, and road engineering and maintenance.”
We are proud and excited to announce this exciting partnership and opportunity to ensure that Drive Smart Colorado continues to provide the community traffic safety education program that has made such substantial contributions to our region.
